Signs of Abuse
The following are signs of abuse.  If your spouse:

1. Threatens to kill you, if you try to leave or seek assistance from a third party.

2. Threatens to take children away from you if you leave or if you seek assistance from a third party.

3. Threatens to kill the children or anyone you tell about the abuse, or threatening to kill a new partner.

4. Dictates what type of behaviour is expected of you.  (Example: Telling you who you may talk to over the phone, what clothing you may or may not wear, what persons you may associate with)

5. Calls you degrading names.

6. Threatens a "copycat killing" of a homicide that has been referred to in the media.

7. Forbids you from having contact with friends, neighbours or family.

8. Monitors your phone calls.

9. Your partner does spot checks on you.

10. Controls or takes your money

11. Takes your car keys

12. Swears at you.

13. Yells at you when you are only a few inches away.

14. Breaks or smashes objects to intimidate you.

15. Uses intimidating body language, such as slamming a fist on a table.

16. Throws objects near or at you.

17. Forces you to behave in a certain way through threatening behaviour or actual threats.

18. Forces you to wrongly acknowledge you are some way responsible for the way you are treated and forced to apologize for the allegedly inappropriate behaviour.

19. Reverses your parenting decisions in the presence of your children to minimize your parental authority. Or reinforcing to the children repeatedly that you haven't any power and are responsible for the abuse.
